Value Orientation for Teams

In this workshop, product engineering teams – Product Managers, Engineering Managers, and Engineers – will learn essential techniques and tools for anchoring their day-to-day work in customer and business value. This is an immersive learning workshop, meaning the work we do in the course will come directly from each team's backlog. This method anchors learning in reality and through doing, making it more likely to stick.

Attendees will learn the importance of anchoring their work on business and customer value and key practices for discovering the value of their work.

Each team will be asked to provide an upcoming feature that they’ll work on. Within the course, we’ll assign a value statement to that feature and break it into smaller (but still valuable) chunks that can be iterated on and delivered continuously. We’ll cover several practices, including proto-personas, story maps, journeys, example maps, and acceptance test-driven development.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this workshop, attendees will learn how to:

  • connect technical work to the business value it supports

  • create a value statement

  • break more extensive features down into small chunks of value

  • use story maps to anchor work on a particular market segment’s or persona’s need

  • articulate the difference between value provided to business, users, and internal improvements (tech debt repayment, etc.)

  • balance work in investment with business value delivery

  • interpret basic economic principles such as top- vs. bottom-line growth

  • connect engineering tasks into the business value they provide

  • hold one another accountable for centering on value within a civil discourse
